Winterize Your Skin

The air is getting colder, dryer & we’re approaching those months where the heat gets turned on in your home. This is a formula for dry and cracking skin.

Whether you’re hitting the slopes or just want to cuddle up on your couch to read a book, there are some basic things that you can do to ensure that your skin thrives during this cold time of the year.

Here are a few tips to consider as the temperatures drop:

1.     Switch to a fat-based skin moisturizer.  It seems obvious that we would lead with that…but most people have never taken the time to read the ingredients on their products.  Water-based moisturizers (which is most products) are going to artificially dry your skin.  Coupling that with the fact that most skincare brands are using petroleum derivatives, plant or seed oils and you have a formula for anti-moisturization using most product.

**We recommend our SkinFood for nearly anything winter.  If you are being adventurous and hitting the slope or very active outside, our EpicDermis® is a great travel companion.

2.     Feed your skin from within!  The holiday season is typically a very high sugar environment.  Sugar is pretty bad across the board, but it can really exacerbate the effects of cold weather when it comes to our dermis.  Limit your sugar intake—instead, lean into the satiety and joy that are offered through consuming copious amounts of butter.

3.     Hydrate smarter—winter is no time for just water.  Electrolytes are important when it’s warm and critical when winter comes.  Winter is also a time to consume additional minerals and fat-soluble vitamins.  ‘Tis the season for Bone Broth!

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention my favorite electrolyte company here—Drink LMNT—these guys have some of the best stuff.  Their Chocolate series of salts is beyond amazing for mixing with coffee this holiday season. LMNT also makes a killer stocking stuffer for the entire family

Turn the shower temperature DOWN!  I know, nothing quite as relaxing as a super-hot shower when it is cold outside.  Really hot showers wreak havoc on your skin because they artificially strip the sebum off your body. Winter is no time for this. Consider turning down the temperature a bit—your skin will thank you.

While you’re in the shower, consider lightening up your use of soap.  Perhaps limiting to pits/privates occasionally—or going soap free for the day. Farrow is a fan of awesome soap, it’s why we have the G.O.A.T of all soaps in our offerings.  Certainly avoid the cleansers, ‘beauty bars’, and anything else that doesn’t say soap.

The optimal time to moisturize, especially in the winter, is right after a shower.  Your skin is plumb and hydrated, especially if you took our advice from #4 and kept the water temperature at a reasonable level.  NOW is the best time to apply your creams.  A little Farrow goes a really long way, so make sure and start with a small amount.

Winter is the time to lean into your biology, not run away from it. Follow these tips and your skin will thrive during this cold season.
